Nottinghamshire, England Lions
On his first-class debut, Matthew Carter, finished with first innings figures of 7 for 56 on a responsive pitch in Taunton. This was the best ever figures by a spinner on county debut after Jack Welsh of Leicestershire, who had returned with figures of 7 for 46 way back in 1938. Carter boasts of a classical action with a tall frame and manages to secure spin from the surface on account of his revolutions with the ball. His sensational debut was signs of things to come, but Carter failed to live up to expectations during 2016, but he did enough to keep himself in the squad. 2017 turned out to be another modest year in terms of performance but Carter remained in the books of Nottinghamshire who secured a new one-year contract extension.
